History of Churchgates
Our founding directors, Robin, Roger, Alwyn and Michael created Churchgate Accountants in 2011 following a management buyout from Grant Thornton.
Robin had qualified in the areas of accountancy, tax and financial planning, which drove his vision of the multi-disciplinary firm, with the new firm focusing on providing advice in these areas. Shortly after, Matthew Boardman joined the board introducing a Legal service line specialising in Corporate Law, Wills, Lasting Power of Attorney and Estates. The firm was rebranded to Churchgates! Alwyn, Director of Financial Planning introduced Investment Management into the service portfolio, enabling us to invest funds for our clients under Discretionary Management. Churchgates aim was to provide a multi-disciplinary service line to our clients supporting them from cradle to grave through all their financial and legal matters.
Robin, Roger and Michael first met when they were all working together at Thornton Baker in Churchgate House in Bury St Edmunds – the location from which Churchgates takes its name. In 1986 Thornton Baker became known as Grant Thornton and moved to our current premises in 1988. It was here that Robin, Roger and Michael met Alwyn and Matthew. Sadly, Roger passed away in October 2022. Shortly after this Joanne and Samuel joined the board, with Penny being promoted to director most recently in 2023.
